The Pirates lost game three to the Phillies 10-6 and fell to 43-44, dropping them behind two games to one in the series with the finale left to play. Paul Skenes got knocked around early, and the offense spent the rest of the day trying to climb back into it without ever getting close enough.
Skenes had one of his rougher outings. The Phillies put up five in the second, helped along by a Nick Gonzales throwing error, and Trea Turner capped it with a three-run homer. It was 5-0 before the Pirates had a base runner do much of anything. Skenes lasted four innings and gave up eight runs, seven earned, on two homers.
The Pirates answered in the third. Henry Davis led off with a solo homer, his seventh, to make it 5-1, and they added another to make it 5-2. Brandon Marsh homered in the bottom half to push it to 6-2, and then Bryce Harper doubled home two in the fourth to make it 8-2. The game stayed a step ahead of them the rest of the way.
They kept chipping. Two in the fifth cut it to 8-4, and in the seventh Jared Triolo doubled home Gonzales and Mangum to make it 8-6 and bring the tying run to the plate. That was as close as they got. Triolo drove in three on the day off the bench.
Alec Bohm put it away in the eighth with a two-run homer off Santana to make it 10-6. The bullpen behind Skenes actually did fine, Sanders and Ramírez combining for scoreless work in the middle innings, but the hole was too deep by the time they settled it down.
The offense did its part with 12 hits, they just left 11 on base and could not string enough together in the innings that counted. They trail in the series with a game to go. On to the finale.
Skenes did not have it. Four innings, eight runs, seven earned, two homers.
The bats kept chipping. Twelve hits and six runs, but 11 left on base kept them from getting all the way back.
Turner and the Phillies did damage early. A five-run second built the lead before the Pirates got on the board.
