The Pirates finished off a sweep of the Brewers with a 14-5 win to head into the All-Star break, and they sit three games over .500 at 50-47. By the game story, that is the best this team has been since 2016. Taking all three from the club leading the division, right before the break, is the kind of stretch that means something.

The Pirates got to Gasser early. In the second, Ryan O’Hearn doubled in a run, Marcell Ozuna singled in another, and Henry Davis capped it with a two-run homer to make it 4-0.

The fourth was the big inning. The Pirates batted around and put up 10. Ozuna started it with a solo homer, Nick Gonzales doubled and drove in two, and Jake Mangum tripled home a run to cap it at 14-2. Nearly everyone in the order had a hand in it.

Paul Skenes had all the room he needed. He went into the sixth, gave up two runs, and struck out seven to move to 8-8. The bullpen let a few in late, with Brice Turang hitting a two-run homer off Kelly in the eighth, but it was long over by then.

This is a good place to be at the break. The Pirates took all three from the Brewers, they are three games over .500, and both the offense and the pitching showed up in this series. There is a long way to go and I know better than to get carried away, but they earned this one against a good team, and it is a good way to reach the break. Enjoy the break.
