The Pirates came from way back to beat the Phillies 11-7 in Philadelphia and move to 43-42. They spotted Philadelphia five runs, then put up eight over two innings to take control.

The early innings belonged to the Phillies. Trea Turner homered to lead off the first and Brandon Marsh added a two-out shot to make it 2-0. Then in the third, Bryce Harper hit a two-run homer to push it to 5-0. Braxton Ashcraft did not have his best, giving up three homers and five runs over six, but he struck out eight and settled in enough to keep it there while the offense went to work.

The bats got going in the fourth. Esmerlyn Valdez homered with Bryan Reynolds aboard to make it 5-2. The fifth is where they took over. Jared Triolo led off with a solo homer, his first of the year, to make it 5-3. Ryan O’Hearn singled home Konnor Griffin, and then an Endy Rodríguez walk with the bases loaded forced in the tying run and O’Hearn came around, part of a six-run inning that put the Pirates up 8-5.

Ashcraft handed it to the bullpen with the lead. Sisk, Soto, Ramírez, and Montgomery covered the last three innings. The Phillies got two back in the eighth on a Marsh homer, his second of the game, and a Realmuto single, cutting it to 8-7 and making it interesting.

Endy Rodríguez put it away in the ninth. With two on and two out, he hit a three-run homer off Chase Shugart to make it 11-7 and take the air out of it. He finished with four RBI on the day. That gave the bullpen room to close it out in the bottom half.

They dug out of a five-run hole on the road against a good Phillies team and got back over .500. On to game two.

01

The bats erased a five-run hole. Down 5-0 through three, they scored eight over the fourth and fifth to take the lead for good.

02

Endy had the biggest day. Two-for-three with four RBI, two walks, and a three-run homer in the ninth to cap it.

03

Ashcraft got the win without his best. Three homers and five runs allowed over six, but he struck out eight and the offense bailed him out.
