Game Log: June 16, 2026 @ Athletics

A night after getting run out of the same building, the Pirates went back to work and got the win. They spotted the A’s four runs in the first, fell behind by what felt like the exact margin as the night before, and then chipped away and came back to win it 6-5.

The start was rough enough that I was ready to write another one similar to yesterday’s game log. Keller loaded the bases and Zack Gelof emptied them with a two-out single and a Spencer Horwitz throwing error. Lawrence Butler knocked in Gelof on a double down the left field line, extending the damage to a fourth run before getting out of the inning. It felt all too familiar.

The difference this time was the top of the lineup coming through, most notably Bryan Reynolds. The Pirates got their scoring started in the fourth on a groundout from Nick Gonzales that drove in a run. Then in the sixth, Reynolds got another one back with a solo shot. Endy Rodríguez would follow that up by knocking in Ryan O’Hearn, who doubled in the at-bat prior. In the seventh, Reynolds tied it with a two-run homer that scored Horwitz. Reynolds had himself a day with four hits, two homers, and three driven in. O’Hearn reached base three times on three hits, and Tyler Callihan also picked up a couple of hits.

Brandon Lowe put the Pirates ahead in the ninth with a line drive homer to right off Alvarado, his 18th of the year.

The best part is that the bullpen held up. Sisk, Ramírez, Montgomery, and Soto put up zeros the rest of the way. Soto worked around a couple of ninth-inning singles before Jacob Wilson lined out to end it. Soto notched his 11th save. Montgomery picked up the win for his inning of work in the eighth.

It is not all fixed. They went 1-for-6 with runners in scoring position and won anyway because the ball left the yard three times. But they are back to .500 at 37-37, and for one night the late innings went the right way. They will go for the series win tonight, which would be their first series taken after dropping the last three. On to the next one.

Thanks for reading.
